JUNEAU -- Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan announced this morning that the city has been awarded a $5 million federal grant to hire more firefighters over the next two years.
The grant eliminates the possibility of fire department layoffs this year, according to his spokesman Sarah Erkmann.
The money comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Grants program. According to FEMA, the program was created to help fire departments increase the number of trained firefighters available in their communities.
The Anchorage Fire Department has been afflicted by the city's budget woes over the past couple of years, with positions left unfilled, layoffs of non-firefighter personnel and rolling closures of fire trucks and engine companies. Sullivan ended the rolling closures on Jan. 1, 2010.
Sullivan has been in Juneau this week for meetings, including the Alaska Municipal League's winter legislative meeting. He announced the grant to reporters ths morning.
