Coast Guard prepares for Bering Sea winter

KODIAK -- The Coast Guard will again move helicopter crews from Kodiak to St. Paul Island to better assist vessels on the Bering Sea winter fishing grounds.

Chief of response Capt. Bark Lloyd says winter in the Bering Sea is a combination of the harshest weather and most activity.

The helicopters are moving north Saturday.

A high endurance cutter also will be in the region.

Opilio crab season has been open since Oct. 15, but most boats fish in January to line up with schedules of shore-side processors.
