Coast Guard recommends new safety rules for fishing boats

SEATTLE -- A report by the Coast Guard makes three dozen recommendations for improving the safety of fishing boats in response to the sinking of the 189-foot Alaska Ranger in March 2008 in the Bering Sea.

The report largely echoes a previous National Transportation Safety Board report on the likely cause of the accident that killed five of the boat's 47 crew members.

The Coast Guard says the exact source of what created a breach in the hull of the boat is not known but was likely related to the vessel's poor material condition.
