HONOLULU -- Satellite radio service, which has long been a staple of consumer broadcast choices in the Lower 48, may soon be coming to Hawaii and Alaska.
The Federal Communications Commission has given Sirius XM Radio Inc. permission to temporarily establish a 2,000-watt transmitter on at least one Hawaiian island and in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.
The commission staff in its satellite policy division last month issued permission to Sirius to begin broadcasting its signal in Hawaii and Alaska during a 180-day period.
It is unclear when Sirius may begin offering its service in the two states. There was no response to requests for comment from the firm, the result of a 2008 merger of the Sirius and XM satellite radio companies.
Broadcaster associations in the two states and the National Association of Broadcasters opposed the Sirius petition to the FCC.
Winning approval of the temporary service may lead Sirius to next seek permanent permission for the transmitters or to reposition one of its satellites to cover Alaska and Hawaii.
