An Anchorage man convicted of attempted murder after a December 2009 shooting outside a Spenard bar was sentenced today for related federal weapons charges.
Eric Suggs, 37, was sentenced to serve 110 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a weapon, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Suggs will serve the federal time concurrent to his sentence in state court last month.
After his conviction Dec. 11, a state judge gave Suggs a 20-year sentence with five years suspended for attempted murder and three years for misconduct involving a controlled substance.
Exactly one year before his conviction, a police dog chased down Suggs after the early-morning shooting outside Chilkoot Charlie's.
Investigators, working with witness accounts, said Suggs shot Joseph Brown Jr. in the arm and stomach with a .38-caliber gun. Brown, 27 at the time, had intervened in an argument between Suggs and Brown's cousin Louis Spencer, police said.
Witnesses said Suggs started shooting when Spencer pulled out a knife. He missed Spencer and hit Brown, who underwent surgery soon after for his injuries, police said.
