What the city manager is calling "the largest fire in the city of Galena" destroyed the mechanical shop of the Larger Galena Interior Learning Academy and was raging out of control Saturday night.
More than 100 people from the town of 600 had turned out to fight the blaze in temperatures at 45 and 50 below zero, said City Manager Tom Corrigan, "We had to go from attack mode to what we call surround and drown," he said. "A number of residents all called 911 around 5 p.m. at the same time" to report the blaze, he said.
"It was our automotive school, our metal shop area," Corrigan said. "We keep acytelene torches in there with oxygen. They were lovely when they lit."
The building, which was not sprinklered, was destroyed, he said.
"All we have is a combination of a 2-inch pipestand from the school building and our water tanker, which we're shuttling back and forth from the water point," he said. "Thankfully, nobody's been hurt."
School was held Friday, but it isn't clear what will happen for classes Monday, he said. "We may still be cleaning up."
"We just don't know how to replace this."
