Lance Mackey clocked the swiftest time in the first stretch of the Copper Basin 300 sled-dog race, which began Saturday afternoon in Paxson. Mackey, the four-time defending Iditarod champion from Fairbanks, made the 58-mile run from Paxson to Chistochina in 5 hours, 24 minutes.
The next three fastest mushers weren't far behind. Jake Berkowitz raced the 58 miles in 5:32, one minute faster than Johamames Rygh and three minutes faster than Brent Sass. Sass was the first to reach the Chistochina checkpoint, arriving at 6:35 p.m., but he was also the first musher to hit the trail in the interval start.
A field of 51 is chasing a purse of $15,000. The race should end sometime Monday in Paxson.
