Parnell seeks motor fuel tax suspension, again

JUNEAU -- Gov. Sean Parnell is again asking the state Legislature to suspend the motor fuel tax for two years.

His request went nowhere during the last legislative session. In pitching the idea again Friday, he used the same rationale as last year: that a suspension is necessary while officials work to address the issue of high energy costs long-term.

According to AAA, the average fuel price in the Anchorage area is $3.43 a gallon. It's higher in other parts of the state.

A prior suspension of the 8-cent-per-gallon state tax expired in September 2009.

The Legislature is set to convene Tuesday.
