5 rescued from foundering vessel near Unalaska Island

The Coast Guard says one of its helicopter crews rescued five fishermen from their disabled vessel in stormy seas before the long-liner went aground on an Alaska island.

Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosley said no one was injured in the mishap early Tuesday morning involving the 58-foot TerriGail. The vessel was unoccupied when it later ran aground on the northwest coast of Unalaska Island.

Mosley said there are no immediate reports of a fuel spill from the vessel, which is carrying 800 gallons of diesel fuel on board.

He said the crew reported shortly after 4 a.m. the TerriGail had lost its propulsion about 40 miles from Unalaska.

A Coast Guard cutter was about 10 miles away and responded to the vessel in 10-foot seas and 50 mph winds.
