Five crewmen were rescued by the Coast Guard overnight after their 68-foot fishing vessel grounded in heavy seas off Kodiak Island.
Another vessel, the Sea Warrior, reported hearing a mayday call from the Midnite Sun and relayed it to the Coast Guard at 12:13 a.m., the Coast Guard said.
The Midnite Sun reported running aground on Tanaak Cape, about 36 miles northwest of Kodiak.
The Coast Guard launched a helicopter "at 1:17 a.m., arrived on scene at 1:38 a.m. and flew the fishermen to Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak with no injuries reported," the Coast Guard said in a written statement today.
The weather in the area at the time was 52 mph winds with 18- to 20-foot seas, the Coast Guard said.
The crewmen were identified by the Coast Guard as Francisco Jackson, 50, Clint Parks, 45, Michael Hintz, 28, William Kingery, 21, all from Kodiak, and Levi Russell, 20, residence unknown.
The Midnite Sun reportedly had 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel onboard, and an overflight was planned for today to see if there was a spill, the Coast Guard reported.
The Coast Guard praised the Sea Warrior crew for relaying the distress call. The original mayday went out on a channel the Coast Guard doesn't monitor, the agency said. The universal channel for emergency calls is VHF channel 16, the Coast Guard said.
