Education fund proposals would keep pace with inflation

JUNEAU -- Some lawmakers are proposing increases in school funding to keep pace with inflation.

This comes amid concerns about putting much more money into an education system that some consider broken.

House Democrats on Tuesday proposed a measure that increases the base student allocation to levels that they say will essentially offset inflation the next three years. A Senate bill that also would let funding keep pace with inflation is expected.

Separately, Sen. Bettye Davis, D-Anchorage, has proposed a funding increase that she says is necessary to help ensure that programs aren't cut. She says there needs to be a debate in the Legislature on increasing the foundation formula.

Some lawmakers seem loathe to add much more new money into the system given high drop-out rates and problems like truancy.
