KODIAK-- A fishing boat that ran aground on Afognak Island 36 miles northwest of the city of Kodiak has discharged hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel into Malina Bay.
KMXT-FM reported efforts were under way to remove the remaining fuel from the 86-foot Midnight Sun.
The vessel ran aground early Friday. A Coast Guard helicopter rescued the five-man crew.
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said the Midnight Sun carried 6,000 gallons of diesel and 200 gallons of lube and hydraulic oil. Spokesman John Brown said as much as 1,500 gallons of diesel had spilled into the bay.
The cause of the grounding was under investigation.
The vessel grounded in an area designated as habitat for endangered marine mammals including the northern sea otter and the Steller sea lion.
