Palin headlines: Protecting the brand name

Sarah and Bristol Palin attempt to trademark their names (Politics Daily): The Palin family lawyer, Alaska attorney Thomas Van Flein, has filed applications to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark "Sarah Palin®" and "Bristol Palin®." ... Celebrities often trademark their names to protect their image or brand from others who might try to cash in on their likeness or use their name in an inappropriate way. ... Politicians seldom trademark their name but they might do so to prevent others from using it, for example, to sell shoddy, unapproved merchandise or "official" candidate memorabilia.

Palin turns down coveted GOP keynote speech (ABC News): After skipping the popular Conservative Political Action Conference for the past three years, Sarah Palin has once again turned down the invitation of CPAC officials to address the conference this year. CPAC organizers invited Palin to deliver the closing-night keynote speech on Saturday, Feb. 12, immediately following the announcement of the results of CPAC's annual presidential straw poll, but after several days of negotiations, she declined.

Palin seeks link to Reagan legacy in centennial speech (Washington Examiner): Palin's high-wattage appearance at the Reagan Ranch Center event [Friday] stands in contrast to events at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The library is the official, establishment repository of the Reagan legacy, and it will host veterans of the Reagan administration this weekend for a concert and military-flavored celebration of the centennial. There will be video tributes from both Presidents Bush, as well as appearances by close Reagan associates like Edwin Meese. But you won't see a hot-button presence like Palin. The Ranch Center and the Library -- only 60 miles apart and both dedicated to serving Reagan's principles -- don't always see eye to eye. In some ways, the events that the groups are holding this weekend mirror a division both in the Reagan legacy and in the Republican party today: the continuing clash between establishment and insurgent conservatism.
