JUNEAU -- Speaker Mike Chenault says the Alaska House could write and pass its own version of a capital budget if the current impasse with the Senate continues.
The House refuses to agree to contingency and non-severability language that the Senate included in its proposed capital budget. Chenault says leaders on both sides are still talking but he says his caucus is frustrated.
The three outstanding bills on the special session call sheet reside in the Senate. The operating and mental health budgets are in conference. The House had hoped to finalize those as early as Monday but Senate leaders wanted to talk with the governor first on proposed additions. Those include setting aside $400 million as an endowment for the governor's scholarship program and $200 million for instate gas line development work.
