Proposed $9 billion operating budget goes to Alaska Senate

JUNEAU -- A key Senate committee has proposed a nearly $9 billion state operating budget, adding $10 million to the spending plan passed by the Alaska House.

The proposal is about $8.6 million less than Gov. Sean Parnell proposed. The Senate Finance Committee is taking public testimony on the plan this week.
Differences between the two bills will have to be settled in a conference committee.
The operating budget is only part of the state's overall spending, albeit a large part.
Lawmakers still must craft a capital budget, which leading senators have suggested could be much higher than the $1.6 billion budget Gov. Sean Parnell originally proposed. And they also must write a supplemental spending bill to help address additional costs that have arisen this fiscal year.
