Ice Classic co-winner thankful for Alaska Standard Time rule

Count Belinda McClurg of Wasilla as a huge fan of Alaska Standard Time.
When McClurg first got word Wednesday that the Nenana River tripod moved at 5:24 p.m., she was a bit dismayed.
"I was at the Arctic Circle Club, and I thought I was an hour off," she said.
Then she learned Nenana Ice Classic rules stick with the Alaska Standard Time in effect when tickets are bought, not the Alaska Daylight Time in play when the ice went out. Her pick of 4:24 p.m. was a winner.
"I couldn't believe it," McClurg said Thursday of the $15,366 winnings she will split with husband Ron. "I picked the same time twice for different days."
It was good enough to ensure a nice November vacation.
"We're planning on going to Mexico, although we'll use part of it to pay off bills," McClurg said. Her husband wants to go to a fishing derby in Cabo San Lucas in November.
"I told him if I win it, we're going to Mexico."
